Do you own a cat? Why not become
a Cat Therapist?
You and your cat can sign up as a
volunteer under the Cat Therapy Programme organised by the
NorthEast CDC and the Cat Welfare Society.
Cat owners can have their cats "trained"
to provide help for the elderly, the handicapped and the sick
deal with their problems. Cat Therapists and their cats would
visit elderly at eldercare centres where the elderly is encouraged
to pet and help the cat. This can help strengthen weakened
muscles as well as provide an incentive for the elderly to
move around.
Stroking an animal is also known
to lower the blood pressure, leading to a sense of well being.
The soft touch of a cat's fur can
also be very therapeutic, as many sick elderly have few opportunities
for human contact. Physical contact with cats provide the
essential warmth of physical contact that all humans crave.
